ALTHOUGH we’re well past the peak of the pandemic, statistics suggest roughly three in five workers who say their job can be done remotely, work from home.
That means that hybrid (or completely remote) working might be here for good.
That means that there’ll be a large number of Americans looking to set up a permanent office in their homes, and a key part of that is one of the best home printers.
Luckily, there’s a huge selection available at a range of price points — we’ve rounded up seven of the best below.
The best home printers, at a glance
- HP Envy Inspire 7955e, $199.99 (saving $70) from Amazon – buy here
- Canon Pixma MG3620, $66.60 (saving $33.39) from Amazon – buy here
- Brother MFC-J4535DW, $249.99 from Amazon – buy here
- HP DeskJet 4155e, $99.99 (saving $25) from Amazon – buy here
- Epson Workforce Pro WF-3820, $149.99 from Amazon – buy here
- Epson EcoTank ET-3830, $349.99 from Amazon – buy here

HP Envy Inspire 7955e

- HP Envy Inspire 7955e, $199.99 (saving $70) from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, Scan, Copy Max. print speed (color): 10ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 25ppm
It might not be the most important feature in an office device, but in our humble opinion, HP makes the best-looking printers on the market right now. This is no more evident than in the Envy Inspire, which comes in a sleek, modern white and would look just the part in a chic home office.
On a more practical note, we love this one thanks to the fact that it comes with six months of instant ink included with HP+, meaning that ink ships to you automatically, so you won’t run out (after six months, you will be charged if you don’t cancel the subscription, but you’ll still save up to 50% on ink, HP claims).
This also comes with advanced photo capabilities, meaning you won’t end up using it just for printing documents.

Canon Pixma MG3620

- Canon Pixma MG3620, $66.60 (saving $33.39) from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, copy, scan Max. print speed (color): 5.7ipm Max. print speed (monochrome): 9.9ipm
If you’re looking for a good home printer, but you don’t want to fork out hundreds of dollars, you’ll struggle to do better than the Canon Pixma MG3620, which is on sale at Amazon.
You can print easily from wi-fi connected devices including your smartphone or tablet (it is compatible with Apple and Android) and it has a space saving design that makes it perfect if real estate is at a premium in your home office.
Of course, you do give up a bit of speed for your money — it prints at just 5.7 images per minute (ipm) in color, but if you’re only printing short documents and aren’t in too much of a rush, the Canon presents a good opportunity to save some cash.
Brother MFC-J4535DW

- Brother MFC-J4535DW, $249.99 from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, copy, scan, fax Max. print speed (color): 19ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 20ppm
At the more sophisticated end of the spectrum is the Brother MFC-J4535DW, which retails for $150 more than the Canon but can print color pages at more than three times the speed of the cheaper model.
While the price tag might be one of the bigger in this list, Brother claims that you will save money in the long run thanks to the fact you won’t have to replace the ink for the first year that you own the printer — the four cartridges that arrive alongside it will last you for a full 12 months, and some reviewers have said that the “ink life is the best part of the printer”.
Other reviewers have said that it presents amazing value for money and: “You can see the quality is evident over some of the other printers in the big box stores.”
HP DeskJet 4155e

- HP DeskJet 4155e, $99.99 (saving $25) from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, scan, copy, mobile fax Max. print speed (color): 5.5ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 8.5ppm
Another budget option, the HP DeskJet 4155e comes with the same offer of six months of free printing as the Envy Inspire (and the same chic design), but comes in at just half the initial price.
HP admits that it is best for basic printing such as recipes, forms and travel documents, but unless your job requires you to print off lots of detailed documents or color pictures, this should fulfil your needs at a reasonable price point.
It’s completely fuss free, too — setup is easy thanks to the HP Smart app, and you can print from your phone as well as your computer. It also comes with four functions (print, scan, copy, mobile fax) which is great for the price point.
Epson Workforce Pro WF-3820

- Epson Workforce Pro WF-3820, $149.99 from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, copy, scan, fax Max. print speed (color): 11ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 21ppm
The Epson Workforce prides itself on high-precision, high-speed printing — it has accurate dot placement and ultra instant-dry pigment inks for what Epson claims are “professional quality prints”, and it can print 21 monochrome pages in a minute, the second-highest in this list after the HP Envy Inspire, which is considerably more expensive.
That means that you can be sure that you’ll be able to print off crystal clear presentations and graphs at a moment’s notice.
It’s also designed to be able to handle big printing jobs, with heat-free technology included for reliability and auto 2-sided printing chosen for efficiency (although you can change this setting).
Epson EcoTank ET-3830

- Epson EcoTank ET-3830, $349.99 from Amazon – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print, copy, scan Max. print speed (color): 8ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 15ppm
This is the most expensive printer in this list, but families adore it thanks to how much money it saves them on printing costs.
That’s because it has high-capacity ink tanks, rather than using small, expensive ink cartridges, meaning that if you do a lot of printing, you’ll save a small fortune: Epson claims you could save as much as 90% compared to the price of cartridges, and with up to two years of ink included in the box, you’ll notice the difference immediately.
It’s also better for the environment, thanks to reducing the number of ink cartridges that end up in land fills.
Reviewers adore it, with one saying: “I have already saved so much money with the amount of printing we have already done, and I STILL have so much ink left. This is amazing. We bought this printer because last year we sent so much money on just ink. This is a game changer.”
However, it’s worth noting that the printing cable doesn’t come included with the printer (although this won’t be an issue if you plan to use wifi printing).
Canon Pixma TR150 Wireless Mobile Printer
- Canon Pixma TR150 Wireless Mobile Printer, $249.99 from OfficeDepot – buy here
Printing technology: Inkjet Functions: Print Max. print speed (color): 5.5ppm Max. print speed (monochrome): 9ppm
If you work from home a few days a week but also find yourself on the go a lot, your life might be enhanced by a printer that can accompany you on the road.
The Canon Pixma TR150 is a completely portable printer that can be linked up to your laptop or phone. It can print up to 330 pages on a full charge, and you can save up to five custom templates on the device itself (a couple of blank forms that you print regularly, for example) so you don’t even need to connect your computer.
It’s been a hit with reviewers, with people who own mobile businesses especially keen on it.
