A LAUNDRY whizz has channeled her inner detective in a recent TikTok video.

She was frustrated when her son’s clean laundry came out of the wash with what looked like oil stains.

TikTok user Jessica shared her handy laundry hack

But Jessica (@jess_loves_2save) is not one to be beaten.

In her post, she set out to find the real cause of the stains and how to get them out.

She discovered that the oil-like stains on freshly washed clothes come from using too much detergent.

When she realized that her son was using a whole capful of detergent — as opposed to a couple of spoonfuls — she knew what was wrong.

He’d also been tossing the cap right in the load, meaning there was way too much detergent swirling around in the wash.

She’s not the only one to have been momentarily stumped by the stains, which make clothes look like they’ve been touched with grease.

Her explanation came in reply to another TikToker who begged for help.

Commenters were thrilled to finally have an answer.

“Those ‘stains’ caused so many arguments between my husband and myself. It wasn’t till he did laundry and it happened to him that I got an apology. Thank you, I had no idea what caused them,” wrote one.

“The way I always blamed my bf for randomly oiling my laundry,” said another.

STAIN REMOVER

Now viewers know the cause of those stains and how to prevent them, but Jessica went one step further and explained her tips for getting rid of them once they’re already there.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Dawn dish soap
  • Water
  • Baby’s toothbrush
  • Laundry soap bar

First, grab the offending item and wet the area around the stain using very cold water.

Then rub a finger-sized drop of Dawn dish soap and gently rub it in.

Next, grab the bar of soap, which is available from Walmart and dollar stores.

Use the toothbrush and gently work it in.

Once finished, place the item in the drum with half a tablespoon of detergent.

Put on a low temperature and a gentle cycle and let it air dry.

DETERGENT – LIQUID OR POWDER

Most washing products contain microplastics, which derive from the petrochemical industry.

These plastics are designed to dissolve, but that doesn’t always happen and can leave marks on clothes straight out of the washer.

According to experts at Eco Homelife, powder detergent is marginally better for the environment.

But when choosing detergents, a biodegradable option is always the best option, they added.

Keep towels smelling fresh with these tips

Fresh Clean Laundromat has shared their useful tips to keep towels smelling fresh and fragrant and odor-free.

  • Always hang towels up to dry after using them.
  • Make sure towels are completely dry when they come out of the dryer.
  • Do not fold and put away damp towels.
  • Avoid using fabric softener on towels.
  • Instead, add white vinegar to prevent build-up.
  • Avoid using too much laundry detergent when washing towels
  • Make sure you are measuring accurately, as build-up on the towels can begin to smell.

Commenters vouched for her hack.

“I use Dawn dish soap and it works,” said one person.

“Baking soda works every time. Simply pat it in and let sit for 24-40 hours and it is gone,” wrote another.

“Wow great information, thank you,” was the grateful reaction of a third person.
